Spartan shooters win DNR event

ACKLEY — Southwestern’s shooting team continued it successful season by sweeping the first six individual places and taking the team title at the Iowa Collegiate Invitational Championships last weekend at the Stockdale Gun Club.

Southwestern’s team score was 950 of 1,000 in the 200-target event.

One of the Spartan squads shot all but two targets in the last round of the day, 123-125. Three shooters had perfect rounds of 25 and two others missed one target each.

Ethan Jolliff was the men’s HOA (High Overall) by hitting 195 of 200 targets. He was perfect at 100-100 on the second round of the day.

Jonathan Cox and Heath Evans tied for second at 190-200 and Cox won the shootoff.

Shelby Woods was high scorer for the women at 187-200.

“It was an awesome day for the SWCC shooting team, bringing home most of the hardware from the shoot,” said Spartan coach Charlie Mundy.

Teams in attendance were SWCC, Iowa Central, Iowa Lakes, NIACC, Iowa State, Hawkeye Community College and DMACC.

The state championship shoot will be held Saturday at the Spartans’ home range, the High Lakes Outdoor Alliance range north of Afton near Three Mile Lake. Action begins 9 a.m. Saturday with awards to be presented at about 3 p.m.
