Clarinda sweeps Creston/O-M tennis

Clarinda came out victorious against both Creston/O-M tennis squads Monday, 7-2 in both boys action here and girls play at Clarinda.

In both cases, conditions were challenging with steady northwest winds of 35 mph and gusts to 45 mph.

With five players missing from the girls team at the State FFA Convention, Creston suffered its first girls loss of the season.

“Tonight was challenging for us since we were missing five players,” Creston assistant coach Amanda Plymale said. “This forced some of our younger JV players to step up to the varsity lineup. Jenna Taylor and Alli Thomsen played strong in singles play and teamed up to seal our only doubles win against a 2014 state qualifying doubles team.”

At No. 1 singles, Taylor ended several points early in taking an 8-3 victory. At No. 2 singles, Thomsen played 2014 Hawkeye 10 No. 2 singles champion Sarah Cabeen and played several long rallies in an 8-3 loss.

“That 8-3 score is not a true reflection of how the points were played,” Plymale said.

In JV play, Madison Callahan and Chloe Hagle moved to 2-0 for the season with a 6-2 victory.

In boys play, Tyler Waddingham picked up a Panther victory at No. 6 singles and the No. 3 doubles team of freshmen Jacob Cook and Jaden Driskell won 8-0.

“Obviously tonight didn’t end the way way we wanted it to,” said Creston/O-M coach Kevin Cooper. “I feel like we are doing some things better, but we are still struggling with unforced errors. The credit goes to Clarinda tonight for the win. The conditions were horrible, and they were more consistent than us, and that was the difference in the meet.”

On Thursday the boys host Audubon while the girls travel to Audubon.
