Briley leads Panther girls at Central indoor meet

PELLA — Creston junior Taylor Briley scored points in the 400 meter dash here Saturday and also ran on the fourth-place 4x800 relay at the Central College High School Girls Meet.

That accounted for Creston’s eight team points, which placed the Panthers 17th.

“Obviously had a skeleton crew there, which was disappointing,” Creston head coach Clay Arnold said. “But there were a couple of highlights. I was very much impressed with Briley. She was awesome. Last year I was depressed, just because she was sitting on the sideline there and not competing. So I was going to be happy just having her on the track and then having her run the times she did, I was ecstatic.”

Briley ran the third leg on Creston’s fourth-place 4x800 relay team that ran 10:57.73. Joining her on that relay were Jami Sickels, Jessica Beatty and Lexie Little.

Briley split a 2:39, while Little anchored in 2:41. Beatty ran her fastest indoor 800-split in 2:45.

“That’s the first time we’ve ever had a 4x8 start the season under 11 minutes, so that was nice to see,” Arnold said. “Beatty chewed up a ton of ground on her leg. Briley chewed up a bunch more. Then Little, she was two or three seconds faster than she was her first indoor meet last year. She chewed up some others.”

Briley then placed sixth in the 400 meter dash, running 1:05.3. She also ran a 28.9-second split on the 4x200 relay that placed 24th.

“Those first two legs of the 4x2, I was ecstatic about,” Arnold said about Beatty and Briley. “They really burned it. Hard to nail a handoff in there, because everything is such tight quarters and on a curve. They nailed that.”

Freshman Faith Wilson finished 46th in the shot put with a best heave of 26 feet, 3 inches.

“I thought Faith Wilson threw well for her first high school meet,” Arnold said.

The Panthers return to action Tuesday at the Hawkeye 10 Conference Southern Division Meet in Shenandoah, before traveling to Clarke on April 2.
