James Matthew Portwood, 57, 400 N. Birch St., was charged on two Union County warrants for third-degree theft 11:10 a.m. Friday at Union County Law Enforcement Center.

According to a Creston Police report, on or about Dec. 13, 2010, Portwood purchased goods and services from Fareway, 105 E. Adams St. Portwood uttered a check for $40 in exchange for said goods and services. The check was drawn on Iowa State Savings Bank, 401 W. Adams St. The check had been returned by the local bank marked insufficient funds. A 10-day notice was received by Portwood on Feb. 7, 2011. No arrangements have been made for payment of this check. The merchant has incurred service charges in the amount of $30, and notification expenses in the amount of $5.54. The total amount due is $75.54.

On or about Oct. 14, 2011, Portwood purchased goods and services from Fareway. Portwood uttered a check in the amount of $90 in exchange for said goods and services. The check was drawn on Iowa State Savings Bank. The check has been returned by the local bank marked insufficient funds. A 10-day notice was received by Portwood on Dec. 17, 2011. No arrangements have been made for payment of this check. The merchant has incurred service charges in the amount of $30, and notification expenses in the amount of $5.59. The total amount due is $125.59.

Portwood has been previously convicted twice of theft.

Portwood was released on an unknown bond.

Trevor James Perrigo, 22, of Urbandale was charged with public intoxication 4:30 a.m. Saturday in the 300 block of West Montgomery Street.

According to a Creston Police report, Perrigo was intoxicated in public at the 300 block of West Montgomery Street. Perrigo consented to a field sobriety test and preliminary breath test. Perrigo was warned prior to his charge that if he was seen back in public he would be charged. Perrigo had a test result of .105 on the preliminary breath test.

Perrigo was released on $300 bond.

Michael Alan Fry, 55, 900 N. Oak St., was charged on a Union County warrant for domestic abuse assault by strangulation and false imprisonment 1:14 p.m. Saturday at Union County Law Enforcement Center.

According to a Creston Police report, on Feb. 27, officers received a 911 call for a domestic abuse in progress. Officers arrived on scene and a female victim said she was held in Fry’s house for over an hour, and that she was beat up, strangled and feared for her life that Fry was going to kill her. She said every time she tried to leave Fry’s house, Fry would stop her and punch or push her so she could not leave the residence. The female victim was taken to the emergency room, and said she was punched and strangled several times, along with being kicked and thrown down. Her phone was broken by Fry, and she was not able to leave the residence to get help or call anyone until she took Fry’s phone. She called 911 and screamed, ‘900 North Oak, I need an officer here now.’ Fry left the scene as soon as she called 911.

Fry was released on $5,000 bond.

Dwain Michael Ripperger, 40, of Afton was charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of paraphernalia 1:15 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of South Elm Street and Highway 34.

According to a Creston Police report, Ripperger was stopped for a traffic violation. During the stop, officers could smell the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Ripperger was found to be in possession of a glass pipe, drug paraphernalia, with plant material consistent with marijuana. Ripperger admitted to smoking marijuana from the pipe.

Ripperger was released on $1,000 bond.

Brandon Lane Barrett, 18, of Afton was charged on a Union County warrant for second-degree theft, conspiracy to commit non-forcible felony and third-degree burglary 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Union County Law Enforcement Center.

According to a Creston Police report, Barrett, along with two juveniles ages 14 and 17, did conspire to take the motor vehicle of Rosalie Davidson, 811 E. Scott St., Afton, 11:50 p.m. Jan. 4. The three did take Davidson’s vehicle, a red 1998 Chevrolet Blazer, at 11:55 p.m. They then entered Union County Fair Board office, 211 S. Grace St., Afton, 11:55 p.m. and went through the drawers and files, making entry through the south window.

Barrett was being held on $5,000 bond.

Louis Michael Bender Jr., 52, 604 S. Division St., was charged with driving while suspended 10 p.m. Sunday at Union County Law Enforcement Center.

According to a Creston Police report, Bender was stopped for a traffic violation, and during the stop it was determined he was suspended for non-payment of an Iowa fine.

Bender was released on $300 bond.

Nickolas Jay Wilkinson, 611 W. Adams St., reported a pair of Beats by Dre headphones were taken between January and February from 401 S. Vine St.

Loss estimate is $500.
