Iowa State freshman and former Creston wrestler Andrew Long wrestled in the 125-pound NCAA title match, losing to Iowa’s Matt McDonough 3-1. Long was the second Creston wrestler to reach a finals match. His brother, Dylan, won second place in 2003.

The NFL suspended New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton without pay for the next season and indefinitely banned the team’s former defensive coordinator, Gregg Williams, for a crush-for-cash bounty system that targeted key opposing players. Payton was the first head coach suspended by the league for any reason.

Plans to make Lincoln School into Creston’s public library cleared a hurdle as Creston City Council agreed to submit an offer to the Creston School Board for the purchase of the building at 1001 W. Jefferson St. The council deliberated for 50 minutes before passing the unanimous vote.

Spahn and Rose Lumber Company in Afton closed up shop after 88 years of doing business in Afton. According to manager Allan Landers, who had managed the store 13 years, corporate leadership wanted to move into offering home improvement centers — rather than just lumberyards — to remain competitive in the market. The remaining lumber supply was shipped to other corporate locations across Iowa.

After making the state basketball tournament for the first time in school history, the Nodaway Valley boys basketball team pulled out a come-from-behind win in the class 2A semifinals, then lost 62-54 in the championship to Unity Christian of Orange City. The Wolverines, led by coach Darrell Burmeister, finished with a 27-1 season record.

Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack signed a new law to give Iowa the toughest restrictions in the nation on pseudoephedrine, a common decongestant used as an ingredient in methamphetamine. The law allowed stores in Iowa to only sell single packages of liquid and liquid gel capsules containing less than 360 milligrams of pseudoephedrine — about the amount found in packages of children’s cold medicine.

The Food and Drug Administration approved the long-awaited chickenpox vaccine. Merck & Co.’s Varivax vaccine was 70 to 90 percent effective at preventing chickenpox lesions, the FDA said, and those stricken by the virus had much milder cases.

Creston’s Southern Prairie YMCA elected its first set of officers. Skip Kenyon, Creston city attorney, was elected as the first president.

With the April 15 budget certification deadline looming, the Creston Community School District Board of Directors approved a budget proposal to be presented at a public hearing in April. The budget anticipated 4.5 percent allowable growth, although the state legislature had yet to set an amount.

The 17-4 Creston Panthers reflected on a season with several record-breaking statistics, including a team-record 1,664 points and five players with 100 rebounds apiece.
