Bert Lockard, 65, of Afton died March 1, 2015, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, March 5, at Afton United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Columbia Cemetery in rural Columbia, Iowa. The Rev. Joel Sutton will officiate. Open visitation will be 2 to 7 p.m. Wednesday with family present 5 to 7 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home, 612 N. Dodge St., Afton. Memorials are to be established. Herbert Wayne Lockard, son of Mary Alice (McConeghey) and Willard Roger Lockard, was born May 17, 1949, in Waterloo.

Bert graduated from Chariton High School in 1967, completed his undergraduate degree at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, and received his master’s degree in music education from Fort Hays State University in Kansas.

On July 19, 1969, Bert married Kathleen Ann Kunch in Chariton.

Bert served in the U.S. Navy from October 1970 until his honorable discharge in October 1974. He taught vocal music for nine years, including three in the East Union school system. In 2011, he retired from working as the postmaster in the Diagonal Post Office after nearly 20 years.

Bert was a member of Afton United Methodist Church and Masonic Lodge. Since his retirement from the post office, Bert played the piano four days each week at Afton Care Center. He also volunteered weekly at Gibson Memorial Library in Creston.

Bert is survived by his wife Kathy Lockard of Afton; daughter Angela (husband Chris) Reed of Jenison, Mich.; sons, Scott Lockard (boyfriend Lalique Pierce) of Tampa, Fla., Steven (wife Melody) Lockard of Washington and Brett Lockard of Arlington, Va.; German exchange students, Alex (wife Nadine) Schulze Wischeler and John (wife Vanessa) Schulze Wischelar; brothers, Roger (wife Susan) Lockard of Southampton, Mass., Leo (wife Brenda) Lockard of Belton, Mo., and Fred (wife Connie) Lockard of Shawnee, Kan.; sister Lyn (husband Jay) Weatherly of Holt, Mo.; and grandchildren, Kenny Lockard and Ella, Nora and Mac Reed.

Bert was preceded in death by his parents and sister Leasa Magee.
