Auxiliary

A GRMC Auxiliary meeting was held Feb. 9 in the MAP Conference beginning at 10:07 a.m. A total of ten members were present in addition to Chelsey Daily, Volunteer Services director.

The meeting began with Monte Neitzel giving the administrative report. Topics included
several issues that will be on the table for Legislative Day in Des Moines Feb. 25. The board was also reminded of the reconstruction of the ortho clinic area with specialty clinic area. Upgrades will also be made upstairs to accommodate more providers. Steve Stults will be replacing Denny Nelson on the Hospital Board.

Minutes from the February meeting were read and approved with a motion by Lois Daub.
Tammy Reeves followed with a second.

New volunteer report included Marcia Hundley and Joan Gibson at the information desk and Pat Parkins in the gift shop.

A volunteer open house was held Feb. 16.

Daub and Joan Chubick had been asked to review the Auxiliary bylaws at last month's
meeting. They reported back with suggestions to update and requested clarifications of some statements within the bylaws. Information was given to Jessica Duncan.

The gift shop manager 90-day review was held Feb. 16.

No updates on the IHA report.

The financial report was distributed and reviewed. A motion was made by Chubick for the
Auxiliary to make the second payment of $4,000 toward the marque signage. Daub placed a motion to second. Motion carried.

The GRMC scholarship committee reported all the material had been distributed. Deadline
for entries is April 1. At this time only one application has been received.

The gift shop fundraiser is approaching. Members are asked to bring a minimum of two
dozen pieces to be sold. A bake sale was held Feb. 12.

The calendar for the year was distributed and reviewed. Buyer Committee members are
discussing attending market April 30 at Prairie Meadows.

Afton Federated Garden Club

The regular meeting of the Afton Federated Garden Club was held Feb. 13 at Afton Community Center. Donna Thomas and Audrey McDowell were hostesses. President Shirley Wallace called the meeting to order with members repeating the Pledge of Allegiance and the Club Collect. Roll call was answered by nine members.

Minutes for the December meeting were read. Judy Weese made a motion and Thomas seconded it to approve them as read. The treasurer’s report was read by Wallace with some discussion. Treasurer Bev Rowe has paid yearly dues for Iowa Arboretum. Bills presented were from Weese, Thomas and Wallace, to be paid at a future meeting. It was discussed about having the president’s name added to the bank statements in case the treasurer isn’t able to attend a meeting where it is necessary to send a check immediately. No motion was made at this time.

Thomas, card chairman, sent a birthday card to Doris Porter. Wallace brought a sympathy card to sign for Lynn La Follette. She had been a member of the Winterset Sun Shine Club.

2015 Think Spring — Wallace brought brochures for the Indianola garden seminar which will be Saturday and the Henry A. Wallace workshop to be held March 21.

Members discussed whether to continue delivering daffodils to the care centers, and it was decided to visit honorary members of the club who aren’t able to attend the meeting anymore. Weese made a motion and Thomas seconded it to have a sign-up sheet for each month and take turns visiting. All agreed and motion carried.

Wallace announced Sandy Gossman will serve as judge for the 2015 Union County Floral Show.

A motion was made to send a yearly donation to the Union County Fair. It was made by Weese and seconded by Audrey McDowell. All agreed and the motion carried.

Wallace brought extra seed catalogs to share with members.

Wallace presented some ideas for activities and programs for 2015 — plant sales, exploring herbs, making a 2016 calendar for sale at the fall luncheon, and planting a tree each year. Members discussed these ideas and plan to carry out several of them.

Wallace read “Fifty Shades of Green” presented by the Prairie Moon Nursery.

Motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Audrey McDowell and seconded by Thomas. The Conservation Pledge was recited by all.

Thomas gave a program on “How Global Warming Affects our Birds.”

Lunch was served by McDowell and Thomas.

AFGC’s next meeting will be March 14 at Afton Community Center with Shirley Wallace and Karen Van Buskirk as hostesses.

Creston Ladies Literary Circle

Creston Ladies Literary Circle met Feb. 20 at the home of Judy Gile. President Linda Hartsock conducted the business meeting. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.

Dottie Dunphy of the Program Committee announced the spring luncheon May 8will be at Crestmoor Golf Club. The program will be a group discussion of the book, “My Name is Mary Sutter” by Robin Olivaira. The book is available at Gibson Memorial Library and more books can be requested from the lending library. This is an “All Iowa Reads” book.

Dunphy then introduced Stephani Finley who reviewed “Splendid Solutions” by Jeffrey Kluger.

The next meeting will be March 6 at the home of Susan Weight, and Connie Rhine will be reviewing “Elizabeth and Hazel.”

TOPS 1338

TOPS 1338 met Jan. 26 for weigh-in at 5 p.m. and a meeting and program at 5:30 p.m. Leader Anna Thompson began the meeting with roll call. Sandy Oswald and Beverly Lyon were first and second best loser for the previous week. The best loser for the month was Lyon with Oswald in second place.

The minutes were approved after being read by Co-Leader Marisue Lewis.

Lewis also gave the program relating “Have a bowl of good health,” and what to look for in choosing cereal.

Alice Brown gave the treasurer’s report.

Squares was won by Neoma Davis and Beverly Lyon won the fines from the week before.

The meeting adjourned at 6 p.m.

On Feb. 9, TOPS met at the Methodist Church for weigh-in at 5 p.m. Thompson called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m. with 11 members answering roll call. The week’s best loser was Oswald and Lewis placed second.

The minutes were read and approved.

Brown gave the treasurer’s report.

Squares was won by Shellie Sullivan.

Sullivan gave the program “12 Steps to control how you eat” and “Learn to eat only when your body is hungry.”

Thompson adjourned the meeting at 6 p.m.

On Feb. 16, TOPS met for weigh-in only. There was social time. Best loser was Sullivan. Diana Loomis was the second best loser. Ten members weighed in resulting in a 10 pound net loss.

Creston United Methodist Women

Creston United Methodist Women held an Executive meeting 9 a.m. Feb. 5. Co-president Sandy McNichols presided. Secretary’s and treasurer’s reports were given and approved.

Judy Kading gave a report on human trafficking from the UMW Action Alerts. She reminded members of a visit by missionaries to Feb. 19. The annual guest night will be held April 9.

The next Executive meeting will be 1 p.m. March 5 to be followed by a Unit meeting at 2 p.m. Guest speaker will be Bill Miller.

The Morning Circle met 9:30 a.m. Feb. 19 . Refreshments were served by Colleen Brotherton. Eleven members and three guests were present. Kading presided over the business meeting. Cares and concerns were discussed. The secretary’s and treasurer’s reports were given and approved. Devotions were given by Beth Perry. Kading made a social action report, and Perry gave the historian’s report.

Business included a review of the public dinner served Feb. 15. Creston United Methodist Women appreciate the support of the community. Plans for the annual guest night scheduled for April 9 were discussed. Invitations are being mailed.

Kading introduced the missionary guests from South America. They are husband and wife, William Llano Zuniga and Rocio Barcenas Jaureg. His home country is Peru and her home country is Colombia. They are serving as a pastoral team with the United Methodist Church General Board of Global Ministries in an area of northeastern Argentina. Kading hosted the couple while they were in the Creston area and acted as their interpreter.

Young Women’s Circle met 5 p.m. Feb. 19 at the church. Kay Ritter provided a meal for circle members and the missionaries. The missionaries provided the program. There was some discussion on duties for the April 9 guest night.

The Evening Circle met at 7 p.m. Feb. 19. Co-chairperson Linda Topliff presided over the meeting. The missionaries from Argentina presented the program.

The business meeting included discussion about hosting the 2 p.m. March 5 Unit meeting and also the circle’s responsibilities for the guest night to be held April 9.

The Bible verse for February was Matthew 25:40.

The next circle meetings will be March 19.
