Understanding the franchise fee

From Jim Stalker

Creston

Boy, am I glad I didn’t send off another one of my famously screwed up letters of concern. Mayor Woods column to us has helped me to understand this “franchise” fee. Well, maybe not understand it, but it has convinced me that I have absolutely no desire to run for any public office.

No wonder the Legislature runs, not smoothly, through its sessions. They have made rulings I’m pretty sure, those who are not lawyers, only roughly comprehend. A big thank you to Mayor Woods in trying to sort out the details to us. I still don’t understand where this costs Alliant anything and where they actually have to pay the city anything for the right to supply us with electricity and gas. Probably, I’ll never be able to grasp that one.

To me, the answer to city shortfalls would be taken care of if the city would take back under its control, an obvious “cash cow,” the city water company. If it is called “City Water” why isn’t it?
