No franchise fee, keep LOST tax

From Darlene Loudon

Creston

I am concerned as a lot of people are about this 5 percent franchise fee. This is a real challenge for the city officials. It’s a headache that a couple of aspirin won’t cure. The pros and cons all need to be laid out on the table and every possibility need to be gone through with a fine tooth comb.

When a homeowner and etc. go over their budget, one only has their self to blame, can’t go to the city and say I’d like to get some more tax money. So, I think the city needs to put the foot down when it comes time to make the budget. I always thought if you don’t have it, you can’t spend it. Why should we have to support some wrong choices? It seems every time we turn around, we are getting slapped in the face with another tax. It really does get old. People don’t have to live in Creston, but that’s home to a lot of us. I can move from Creston anytime I want. I always thought we were trying to grow our team, not wash it away.

The six figure proposed to some of the establishments would be an awful load for them to carry. It’s a big “burden.” They chose to come to Creston and bring a lot of jobs. What if you made them so “upset” that they moved their establishments out of Creston? Then people would be out of jobs and you would expect them to still live here and pay the high fee. Don’t think that will happen. They will tell you, “Bye, bye.”

Of course these are the two paycheck residents. It takes two paychecks anymore to live. It’s not a problem if the two paychecks combined make you in the six figure bracket.

As election time comes around, people start paying attention to who votes what. It’s a free country and people can vote the way they see fit. Sometimes it’s not always for the good.

I think you should keep the 1 percent LOST tax. We’re all used to that. A lot of people have trouble paying their utility bills now. What would it be if the 5 percent passed?

Twenty-five years is a long time for a tax to be in place. In 25 years, a lot of people will have passed away and gone to heaven. And if no one moves into their residence, then you won’t have that money coming in as fees on utility bills.

Everything will go up in Creston if the 5 percent fee goes in effect. So then think about it — people will go shop where it’s cheaper.

Come on. Why is the “only exemption” city-owned properties?

The can of worms has been opened and the worms are running all over the table. Money, money, money that’s the name of the game.
