Elzevir Reading Circle

Elzevir Reading Circle met Jan. 9 at the home of Kay Ritter for a 12:30 p.m. anniversary luncheon. The study club was organized in 1893 and federated in 1894.

After a luncheon, President Terry Ammon opened the meeting with a quote from Winnie Barnett “Lasting Memories.” Roll call was answered with members telling of current or recently read books. The secretary read the minutes of the previous meeting and the treasurer gave the treasurer’s report. Both were approved as read.

Reports for volunteer hours and donations were distributed. Information needs to be given to the president by the end of the month. Ammon moved to continue with the same projects as last year with the addition of visiting or assisting others. Barbara Thomsen seconded and motion carried.

Angela Pullen, reading chairman, reported all members had turned in GFWC Adventures in Reading reports making the club a 100 percent club. She reviewed the most read books, newspapers and magazines. New sheets were handed out for next year’s reporting.

Approximately $80 worth of food collected at the last meeting had been delivered to Matura.

The meeting closed with all reciting Mary Stewart’s Club Collect. Mary Burg moved to adjourn the meeting, seconded by Angela Pullen. Motion carried.

The next meeting will be Feb. 13 at the home of Terry Ammon. Linda Topliff will give the program.

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary met Jan. 14.

Canasta winners were Linda Clark, first; Beulah McDonald, second; and Barb Bills, third.

Gwen Sandeman won the door prize.

Wanda Nash was hostess for cards and chatter Wednesday.

Canasta winners were Barb Veitz, first; Joan Chubick, second; and Maxine May, third.

Wanda Nash won the door prize.

Mary Kline will be hostess for cards and chatter Wednesday, Jan. 28.

Mary Circle

Mary Circle of First Christian Church met Jan. 15 with Barb Lightner as hostess.

There were 12 members present. President Fils opened the meeting with the Disciple Women’s prayer.

Margaret gave the treasurer’s report.

Old business was discussed.

New business was coffee will be held Jan. 18.

There will be a pie auction for the scholarship fund.

Dresses and shorts for children in Africa orphanage were given through Larkin Powell, who will deliver them in May.

Fils then turned the meeting over to Rhonda Vogel who had the lesson on “Can I Really Trust the Bible?”

After a lesson discussion, the hostess served dessert.

The next meeting will be Feb. 19 at the church with Joyce Burkhead as hostess.

VFW POST 1797

VFW post 1797 met Jan. 13 at the Elks in Creston. Thirty-four members and guests were present for dinner. Patriot Pen winners accepted their awards before dinner.

Commander O’Daniels called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. with 23 members present.

Minutes and QM reports were read and approved.

Service officers report was honor guard 2 hours, community service 38 hours, Christmas basket 42 hours, and hospital 50 hours for a total of 132 hours. Members also traveled 365 miles for veterans.

In old business, thanks to all who helped with the Christmas basket this year. The Union County VA Commission met with six employees of the Des Moines VA, including the director, regarding an outreach clinic in south central Iowa.

In new business, state raffle tickets are available.

Veterans on the Hill took place Jan. 21. Afton VFW joined in talks with Creston VFW to maybe consolidate.

In other business, Ron Jackson was appointed to three year trustee to take Asa Denton’s place.

The State Mid-Winter meeting will be held Jan. 23-25 at Lakeside Casino in Osceola.

The meeting adjourned at 8 p.m.

The next meeting will be Feb. 10 at the Elks with dinner at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. meeting. All veterans are encouraged to attend.

GRMC Auxiliary

GRMC Auxiliary held its first meeting for the calendar year of 2015 10 a.m. Jan. 12 in the MAP Conference Room. A total of 11 members were present. Martha Musmaker conducted the meeting. New Volunteer Services Director Chelsey Daily was welcomed to the group. Daily gave a brief introduction to herself. She will be working part time.

Monte Neitzel gave the monthly administrative report. 2015 will involve renovations to the specialty clinic area, location changes for SHIIP and the ortho area, and computer system changes.

The secretary’s report was reviewed. The board did agree to re-address the membership fee for 2015. The board voted to amend the starting date for the membership increase. Material concerning dues had already been sent out at usual rates. Auxiliary dues for 2015 will remain at $5 per year and the lifetime membership will remain at $50. In 2016, the Auxiliary dues will increase to $10 per year and lifetime membership will be $100. Members who have previously purchased their lifetime membership will be grandfathered into the system. Employees purchasing a membership will receive a coupon for a 20 percent discount in the gift shop. This coupon will be good tor a one time purchase made for membership year. Nancy Hawks made a motion to approve the amendment to the start date, and Tammy Reeves followed with motion to second. Motion carried unanimously.

Gift shop manager’s report included purchases made. Stacey returned to working in the shop Monday. The board decided to hold a bake sale in the gift shop 10 a.m. Feb. 12. Every board member is encouraged to bring at least one dozen wrapped items (candy, cookies, bars, cupcakes or etc.) to be sold to celebrate Valentines Day.

The board also voted to transfer $2,000 to the gift shop account. Motion made by Nancy Hawks and seconded by Rhonda Giles. Motion carried unanimously.

In other business, the board members will be reviewing the bylaws and decide if changes need to be made. Lois Daub and Joan Chubick will be reviewing and bring suggested changes to the February meeting.

Jessica Duncan reported that the snow flake project, Lights for Loved Ones, was a big success. One-hundred twenty-five people sponsored snowflakes.

Scholarship committee will soon be reviewing applications. Materials have been sent out with a deadline of April 1.

The meeting adjourned at 11:05 a.m. with the next meeting being scheduled for 10 a.m. Feb. 9 in the MAP Conference Room.

PI Chapter Delta Kappa

Eleven members and one guest attended the Nov. 10 meeting of PI Chapter Delta Kappa Gamma International at The Windrow. Guest, Roxy Schwartz, Area 6 regional coordinator, presented information about the 2015 state convention to be held June 12-14 at the Marriot Hotel in Des Moines.

President Sandy Harris called the meeting to order.

M/S/C by Joan Lienneman and Martha Pine to approve the October minutes as read.

The treasurer’s report was given by Kim Riley and was approved as presented. Treasurer Kim Riley announced her resignation effective at the end of the May 2015 meeting.

Correspondence: Riley notified the group that Judith Wachter has resigned from the chapter. A thank you note was read from State President Mary Zirkelbach.

Old Business:

Secretary Sherri Nissen shared with the group information from the 2015 State Planning Committee held Oct. 11.

New Business:

The group discussed giving “Thank” gifts to new teachers in Adams and Union counties with notes thanking them for choosing the teaching profession. The group decided to meet Nov. 24 to put the bags together and deliver them for Thanksgiving.

A silent auction was held with amount collected to be announced at the March meeting.

The next meeting will be held March 9 at Van Gelder’s for a spring fashion show.

Alpha Delta Kappa

The Iowa Alpha Gamma chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa met Jan. 12 in the home of Carolyn Biere. Marilyn Bohnker, Pauline McCoy and Jane Eklund were hostesses with 10 members attending.

President Marilyn Bohnker conducted the business meeting. Treasurer Lois Houghtaling reported that $1,168 was raised at the November charity auction. Thank yous were read from C.A.R.E., Parents as Teachers, and Matura for contributions made. The International Alpha Delta Kappa convention will be held July 8-12 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Arlan and Carolyn Biere shared photos of their Rhine River Cruise. They travelled through the Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany and France.

The next meeting will be Feb. 9 at The Pizza Ranch with Jane Eklund presenting a fraternal education quiz.

TOPS 1338

TOPS 1338 met 5:30 p.m. Jan. 12 after weighing in at 5 p.m. at the Methodist Church. Ten members answered roll call. Anna Thompson was the best loser and Neoma Davis was second. For the year 2014, Thompson was second with Beverly Lyon being the best loser.

The minutes were read by Diana Loomis and approved. Alice Brown gave the treasurer’s report.

New business was the yearly social.

Fines from Dec. 29 went to Marisue Lewis. The Red Can Challenge for the week was to keep a food diary. Squares went to Neoma Davis.

On Jan. 19, Creston TOPS met at 5:30 p.m. The meeting was called to order by leader Anna Thompson. Ten members had weighed in at 5 p.m. Best loser for the week was Beverly Lyon. Neoma Davis was the next best loser.

The minutes were read and approved. Alice Brown gave the treasurer’s report. Fines from the previous meeting went to Thompson. The Red Can Challenge was to eat a complete breakfast daily.

Marisue Lewis will give the program Jan. 25. This week Mitzi Cellan shared ways to avoid overindulgence at social gatherings, especially those with buffets. She also talked about the importance of being good healthy role models for children, such as exercising and not smoking.

TOPS 1338 of Creston meets Mondays at the Methodist Church at the corner of North Elm and Howard streets. Weigh-in is from 5 to 5:30 p.m. with a short meeting after. Anybody is welcome to visit and or join if needing support achieving their goals in 2015 regarding weight loss and healthier living.

Kiwanis

The weekly Kiwanis meeting was held 12:05 p.m. Tuesday at The Windrow with 27 members and two guests. President Jane Lowe presided. Drew Henderson did the prayer, Craig Mittag was greeter, and Jacki Steffen was the finemaster.

The program was Todd Jackson, Creston fire chief, who discussed the fire departments statistics from last year and their 724 calls for fire and medical assistance. The fire departments annual fire safety programs and fire extinguisher training for the public. Jackson also promoted the use of residential sprinkler systems.

Kiwanis Board meeting will be next Tuesday. New members are always welcome.
