Catholic Daughters

Court Joan of Arc No. 428 met Dec. 9 in the parish hall following mass celebrated by the Rev. Ken Halbur. A meal was served by the committee of Teresa Weis, Pat Pokorny and Ann Moore.

The business meeting opened with the Pledge of Allegiance and an Advent prayer read by Regent Retta.

The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. Motion to approve was made by Irene Ripperger and seconded by Betty Baker. The treasurer’s report was given by Teresa Weis. Motion to approve was made by Pat Wagoner and seconded by Kathy Tapken. Motion carried. State and national dues are due. Motion was made by Carolyn Downing to make paying these a standing rule. It was seconded by Baker. Motion carried.

Those assisting at the Bunn bake sale held Nov. 21 were Baker, Weis, June Huewe, Irene Ripperger, Betty Bradley and Retta Ripperger. The state’s portion of these funds (1/2) is to be sent to the diocese to help with food assistance for the needy, and Catholic Daughters retains the other half. As members are in need of funds for regular expenses, the motion was made by Kathy Tapken and seconded by Barb Thomsen to send $100 to the diocese. Motion carried.

Discussion was held about the possibility of catering food to the smaller factories of Bunn to raise money for state convention. No decision was made.

The family has been chosen for Christmas basket. It was decided to include some toys for the children, and the Rerun will give a gift certificate. Huewe made the motion to purchase a $50 scrip card from Fareway to be used for meat. It was approved.

Discussion was held on purchasing a subscription to “Share” magazine for Father. Teresa said she would give him hers when she is finished with it.

Jean Miller made a motion and Irene Ripperger seconded it to purchase a CD of A pin for Father. Motion was approved.

The last issue of “The Voice” has an article about the state convention speakers. It also states that hosting court members’ registration is $100 compared to $135 for everyone else. Dates are May 14-17. Teresa reserved some rooms. Reservations may be canceled if there aren’t enough women to fill them. Delegates also need to be elected. CD of A can elect one delegate plus a regent, and are entitled to four alternates. Deadline to submit the names is Feb. 1. In addition to the 10 door prizes, CD of A has been asked to donate a raffle prize valued at $50. People are needed to stuff goodie bags on May 13. Members are down to help with two events on Friday, three on Saturday and one on Sunday.

Retta passed around a CD of A store flyer she received detailing scholarships available for eighth graders going to a public high school next year. National CD of A Graduate Scholarship and one for CD of A members or their families for graduate school.

The education contest is coming up. It is open to anyone who wants to contribute, not just children. Winners need to be sent to the state to be judged with a postmark no later than March 15.

CD of A will plan to have installation of new members at Mass in January. Members received a list of CRHP members to invite to Catholic Daughters. Halbur has received a letter from the bishop encouraging support of CD of A.

A call tree list was handed out to each member.

Ann Moore presented a program on china painting. Items she brought for display included Christmas ornaments for hospice house made for patients or families who have lost someone during the year. She agreed to paint some items for CD of A to be used as prizes at the state convention. Connie Fredrickson played Christmas music on the piano. A gift exchange was held.

Barb Thompson won the half and half. The membership prayer was recited to close the meeting. Irene Ripperger made the motion to adjourn. Thomsen seconded. Meeting adjourned.

Creston Lions Club

Creston Lions met Jan. 6 at The Pizza Ranch. President Ron Dunphy opened the meeting at 6:30 p.m. by leading in the Pledge of Allegiance. Delmer Brown gave the invocation. Two guests were introduced.

Al Pokorny and Jerry Thomsen were the program committee. Thomsen introduced Brian Zachary as guest speaker. He told about his work being in charge of the farmers’ market and the Arts Council.

Dunphy presided over the business meeting. The secretary’s and treasurer’s reports were approved. Charles Chester reported on plans for the annual Spud Supper to be held Feb. 26 at First United Methodist Church. Tickets will be $7. Several members helped deliver Christmas baskets. A policy was approved regarding requests for financial assistance for eye glasses and hearing aids. Two new members are joining Creston Lions. There being no further business the meeting adjourned.

Kiwanis

The weekly Kiwanis meeting was held 12:05 p.m. Tuesday at The Windrow with 25 members and one guest. President Jane Lowe presided. Jim Morris did the prayer, and Bob Miller was finemaster.

The program was Dick Bergstrom who discussed his three seasons coaching and living part-time in Europe, working with different football teams.
