Update: Lockdown lifted at Southwestern Community College

Classes will be held today at the college

Officials have lifted a lockdown imposed on the dorms at Southwestern Community College in Creston.

The lockdown was ordered around 8 p.m. Thursday because a student reported receiving a threat through social media. The lockdown was lifted around 3 a.m. today. Authorities say officers found nothing as they searched the area and determined that there was no immediate safety issue. Investigators are seeking records from social media sites.
 
The school says classes will be held Friday and that Creston Police will continue to monitor activities on campus.
Responding in this lockdown were Creston Police, Union County Sheriff's Office and Iowa Highway Patrol.
 
There are no charges at this time and the names of the student and person making alleged threats have not been released.

On December 11, 2014, a report was received by the Creston Police Department that a potential threat was received by a student at Southwestern Community College.  This threat was communicated through social media.  The school was placed in precautionary lockdown.  The Creston Police Department, Union County Sheriff’s Office, and the Iowa Highway Patrol responded.  Although no immediate safety issues were found, local and area law enforcement agencies are providing additional assistance regarding the continuing investigation.  Electronic records are being obtained from the social media sites.

Creston Police Department is continuing to monitor activities on campus to insure the ongoing safety of students and staff. Additional information will be released when available.

From SWCC: College officials, in cooperation with law enforcement, have determined there is no immediate safety issue.  Classes will be held at Southwestern today (Friday).

The residence halls at Southwestern Community College remain on lockdown after a threat was made today (Thursday) to a student living on campus — this according to a post on the college's website around 11 p.m. tonight.

Creston Police are still on campus. Patrons are still being asked to stay away from the campus at this time. Creston News Advertiser will post updates as they become available.

Creston Police are on campus now and are monitoring the situation. College officials will provide updates as they become available. Patrons are asked to stay away from the campus at this time.
