Nodaway Valley 30, CAM 15

Guard Josie Carter, forward Jessica Nelson and post player Josie Clark all hit 3-pointers as Nodaway Valley outscored CAM 30-15 in the two-quarter scrimmage at Southwestern Community College Thursday.

Coach Tom Thompson said that perimeter shooting will facilitate a versatile offense.

“I thought we looked pretty smooth offensively,” Thompson said. “Hopefully that shooting helps spread the floor so we can get some penetration. I have two or three guards who can penetrate. When those kids are hitting threes, it does open things up.”

Paige McElfish was one of those players looking to score inside, and she finished with a team-high 13 points Thursday.

Things went pretty well on the other end of the court as well, as the Wolverines prepare for the season opener at home Dec. 2 against a West Central Valley team boasting strong guard play.

“Our pressure defense looked good,” Thompson said, “except we gave them a few easy open shots because we were out of position.”

Nodaway Valley (30) — Paige McElfish 13, Josie Clark 7, Jessica Nelson 7, Josie Carter 3.

CAM (15).

Essex 26,

East Union 8

East Union coach Carol McGuire let her promising freshmen gain some preseason game experience as the Eagles had a rough time early in falling behind 24-4 against a hot-shooting Essex team in a 26-8 loss.

“Their shots were falling and ours weren’t,” McGuire said of the early going. “They pressed us and we had some younger girls in. I had six freshmen tonight and I told them they were going to play tonight. There are some good ballplayers in that class. I just have to get them used to playing in a game.”

Hampering the Eagles’ cause against Essex’s pressure was the absence of senior point guard Emily Eckels, out until Dec. 1 with a concussion.

“She’s my team leader and ball handler, so it will help to have her back out there,” McGuire said.

In the first game of the night, Adair-Casey defeated Riverside 38-14.

East Union (8) — Chelsea Hoyt 2, Olivia Eckels 2, Mara Weis 2, Cassidy Riley 2.

Essex (26).
