Concrete work was completed on .8 of a mile along Duane E. Mitchell Marsh, connecting Creston’s Park-to-Park Trail with the road (140th Street) directly south of the newly-built spillway at Green Valley Lake. The recreation trail first connected Adams Street near McKinley Park north through Greater Regional Medical Center’s parking lot and on past Southern Prairie YMCA and Southwestern Community College property along Green Valley Road. This latest phase left the northern edge of the surfaced trail close to the entrances for 9.5 miles of grass trails around Green Valley Lake. Those trails are suitable for hiking and mountain bicycles.

The Iowana Hotel restoration project was facing a significant setback in funding. Because of a lack of investors, $4.4 million in low-income housing tax credits previously awarded to the project by the Iowa Finance Authority (IFA) was in danger of being returned.

Members of the Nodaway Valley girls cross country team won the Class 1A state championship at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course in Fort Dodge. The Wolverines placed second overall in the Class 1A regional meet, but shocked Class 1A in the state meet, edging No. 1 Dike-New Hartford by one point to secure the school’s first-ever girls state cross country championship. The team was coached by Darrell Burmeister.

Five Irving elementary fourth-grade students received the October SOAR award and got to eat lunch at Hy-Vee with assistant principal Jan Harris. SOAR — Students On A Roll — was started in 2002 by elementary principal Brad Baker. The program rewarded students for doing something good and derived from principles of Character Counts. Students were treated to lunch through a partnership with Rick Fyock, Hy-Vee store manager.

Creston High School cross country coaches Pat Schlapia and Kent Adamson agreed to have their heads shaved because the team made it to state competition.

20 years ago

A mock election was held at Burton R. Jones Middle School. National election votes were:

• U.S. Representative, Fourth District: Jim Lightfoot, Republican, 207; Elaine Baxter, Democrat, 59.

• Governor: Terry Branstad, Republican, 216; Bonnie Campbell, Democrat, 99.

During the planning stages for Creston’s YMCA, a meeting was held to get public input on programming. Questions fielded included programming for disabled residents, weight room equipment, aquatics, wellness, child care and senior citizen classes.

Creston High School’s musical production was “Fiddler on the Roof.”
