Griswold sweeps Lenox

GRISWOLD — Host Griswold advanced to Friday’s Class 1A regional semifinals at home against Stanton with a 25-10, 25-16, 25-17 victory over Lenox Tuesday night.

Griswold (20-9) takes on a Stanton team (24-10) that beat Bedford Tuesday, 3-1. The regional finals are Wednesday in Greenfield.

Lenox bows out at 6-18.

Tiger coach Sara Dukes said the 25-10 opening game set the tone for the night. The next two sets were more competitive, but errors still hampered the Tigers.

“We didn’t come off the bus playing as strong as we wanted to,” Dukes said. “We made too many errors. Griswold has an outstanding freshman hitter who really hits the line shots well. The others place the ball well.”

Katie Dukes, playing her final match for the Tigers, had a team-high eight kills. Another senior, Aurora Arevalo, finished with five kills.

Senior setter Morgan Miller and junior Bethany Chrisetensen each had nine assists. Arevalo had seven digs and four blocks to lead the defense. Jacy Stoaks was 8-8 serving with two aces.

Dukes praised seniors Regan Tullberg, Bailey Schmitz, Megan Brown, Kara Henrichs, Miller, Dukes and Arevalo for their contributions over the years.

“These girls have seen a lot of coaches in their careers, and seven of them stuck it out,” Dukes said. “They have big hearts. They just wanted the team to get better.”
