Creston/O-M 63, Atlantic 28

ATLANTIC — Creston/O-M bounced back from its first district loss last week to Dallas Center-Grimes with a 63-28 win over Atlantic here on Friday.

The Panthers now prepare for Wednesday's home playoff game, against an opponent yet to be determined.

Creston/O-M finished a 7-2 regular season by sailing to a 41-7 halftime lead on the way to the 35-point victory in the fog-shrouded Trojan Bowl.

Chase Shiltz scored four touchdowns for the Panthers on three rushing plays and a 12-yard pass reception from Alex Nielsen, who tossed four TD passes and ran for another from 24 yards.

Senior wide receiver Bryce Briley had his best career game with two touchdown receptions of 79 and 80 yards, plus an 84-yard kickoff return to the Trojan 3-yard line to start the second half, and an 89-yard kick return for a touchdown later in the fourth quarter after Atlantic had scored two TDs against Panther defensive reserves. That return kept the margin comfortable at 55-21.

McClain Haines joined in the big-play barrage, hauling in a deep pass from Nielsen for a 70-yard touchdown in the first quarter to give the Panthers their first lead at 13-7.

Atlantic had marched 91 yards on just nine plays and 2:07 of clock on the first possession of the game to go ahead 7-0, and 6-6, 310-pound defensive tackle Skyler Svoboda blocked Conner Pals' extra-point kick to keep the Trojans in front 7-6 after Shiltz ran for his first touchdown.

Pals had two pass interceptions in the game to give him six for the season — one behind Haines.

Pals also attempted a 52-yard field goal in the third quarter that was online, but caught by Atlantic in the end zone on a night with damp, heavy air. It would have matched his career-longest field goal from earlier this season at Greene County. A bank of fog developed early in the game, heaviest on the southwest portion of the playing field.

Shiltz finished with 103 yards rushing on 12 carries. NIelsen was 10-of-20 passing for 298 yards and one interception with four TDs.

Briley had 163 yards receiving on three catches, two for TDs. He also had 186 yards on three kick returns, including the touchdown, plus a defensive pass interception late in the first half. Linebacker Seth Maitlen had five unassisted tackles and 11 assisted tackles for 16 total.

The Panthers finished second in District 8 with a 5-1 record, and 7-2 overall heading into Wednesday's home playoff game.

Final district standings are Dallas Center-Grimes 6-0 (8-1); Creston/O-M 5-1 (7-2); Winterset 4-2 (6-3); ADM 3-3 (5-4); Harlan 2-4 (3-6); Atlantic 1-5 (3-6); and Glenwood 0-6 (2-7).

CORNING — Southwest Valley converted two fourth-and-longs on its final drive of the game, but the comeback attempt was cut short when Chance Cobb's pass to Colten Drake was tipped by the receiver and then picked off by Interstate 35's Taylor O'Dea at the 2-yard line with :14 left in the game.

The Timberwolves fell behind early, 14-0, after a Southwest Valley touchdown was called back on the first possession of the game.

Cole Daniels scored from 20 yards out and Jaylan White connected with Zach Goering for a 12-yard touchdown to put the Roadrunners up 14-0 with :38 left in the first quarter.

Southwest Valley answered back with a Gunnar McCuen 1-yard TD run with 7:35 to go in the half that closed the game to 14-8 after a Tyler Bissell 2-point conversion.

McCuen added another 1-yard TD run with 5:03 to go in the half, set up by a Logan Calkins blocked punt.

But the momentum was short-lived, as O'Dea picked off Cobb and returned it for a touchdown with 1:30 to go in the half, putting Interstate 35 up 20-14.

The Roadrunners struck first in the second half on a 7-yard touchdown run by Jaylan White, giving I-35 the 27-14 win.

A fake punt by Southwest Valley turned into a first down as Drake picked up 13 yards on fourth-and-5. That led to a Tyler Bissell 22-yard TD run around the right side. A 2-point conversion made the score 27-22 with 9:24 to go.

After the Southwest Valley defense held on fourth down, the Timberwolves got the ball back for one final chance to win the game.

The Timberwolves converted two fourth downs, but the O'Dea interception with :14 left sealed the win for Interstate 35.

The Roadrunners finish the season 2-7 overall and 1-5 in Class 1A District 8. Southwest Valley ends the year at 1-8 overall and 0-6 in District 8.
