State agencies were preparing to eliminate more than 1,300 jobs to meet a 10 percent spending cut ordered by Gov. Chet Culver after state tax revenue came in less than expected. The agencies had until Oct. 28 to develop their plans. The reductions included 791 layoffs and elimination of 529 positions that were currently vacant. Those cuts did not include the judicial branch, Legislature or Board of Regents, which oversee the state’s three public universities. The 10 percent reduction applied to the judicial branch.

Southwestern Community College head volleyball coach Rita Schroeder achieved her 700th victory in a three-set match with Clinton Community College, the second victory for SWCC over Clinton in fall 2009. Schroeder registered her 500th in 2000 and her 600th victory in 2004. She was named coach of the year on five occasions — 1988, 1991, 1992, 1993 and 1999. Athletic Director Bill Krejci presented her with the coaching award.

Skateboarders volunteered to pick up trash in honor of national Make a Difference Day. The event was called Ken’s Kids Klean-up, started by City Councilman Ken Hudson. Hudson thought it was a good idea for the skateboarders to show how dedicated they were to the skatepark by doing some good in the community. Clean-up was in uptown Creston from Adams to Townline Street.

A cargo plane from Chicago landed safely at Detroit Metropolitan Airport after dropping an engine somewhere over Michigan. The Kalitta Air jet took off from O’Hare International Airport and was bound for New York’s Kennedy International Airport when it reported mechanical problems with one of the engines. The Boeing 741-R was able to fly but was diverted as a safety precaution to Detroit, where it landed without incident. No one was injured.

Iowa Communications Network (ICN) was introduced at Southwestern Community College. ICN offered two-way video and audio communication for classes 60 hours a week. There were 274 different class offerings. Masters level classes and industrial training programs were offered in the evening through Iowa Western Community College, and during the day, high school and undergraduate classes were offered.

A candlelight vigil was held on the steps of Union County Courthouse in observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Fifty attended the event sponsored by Family Violence Center and Southwest Iowa Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

“Forrest Gump” starring Tom Hanks was playing at Strand Theatre.
