Southwest Valley 3, Clarinda Acad. 0

CORNING — Southwest Valley opened Class 2A regional play here Tuesday with a 25-14, 25-6, 25-13 win over Clarinda Academy.

“The girls came out and did a nice job tonight,” Southwest Valley head coach Lindsay Wetzel said. “We served aggressively and built a nice lead, which allowed us to get other kids some playing time. We were also able to mix up the lineup and try some different offensive sets.”

Marie Palmer led a balanced attack at the net for the Timberwolves with 11 kills. Jade Petersen contributed six kills, while Danica Sunderman finished with four. Kelsey Means added three. Allie Bronner and Nichole Bashor each recorded two kills.

Taylor Damewood set 13 assists and Palmer added six assists. Lexi Bronner served 17-of-18 with seven aces, while Sunderman served four aces in six attempts. Kim Hults and Palmer each served three aces. Bashor and Means both had two ace serves.

The Timberwolves advance to the Class 2A Region 4 semifinals at 7 p.m. on Oct. 28 at Earlham against the Cardinals.

Mount Ayr 3, Lamoni 0

MOUNT AYR — A Mount Ayr squad dealing with several injuries knocked off Lamoni here Tuesday in a Class 1A regional opener, 25-20, 25-21, 25-9.

“We knew coming into tonight’s game things would look a little different,” Mount Ayr head coach Tori Braby said. “Two starters on the bench with injuries affected us in the enthusiasm department.”

Macy Larsen is out with a torn ACL and will have surgery on Thursday. Kirsten Dolecheck missed the match with a hip ailment.

Alex Booth and Shelbie Greene helped fill Larsen’s void, while Tessa Shields filled in for Dolecheck.

“I think Alex Booth came in as a newcomer and did a great job in the back row,” Braby said. “Shelbie Greene stepped up in the front row as setter. Tessa Shields stepped in and did a nice job in her position. It was a good game for the girls to get used to playing together before heading to Murray next week.”

Kelcie Shields finished with 16 kills and five total blocks, while Allie Shields added 11 kills and three total blocks. Sadie Frost notched five kills with one block. Greene set 19 assists, while Alyssa Johnson added 14 assists and four block assists.

Blair Glendenning had a team-high 23 digs, while Booth and Johnson each added 10 digs. Frost finished with 11 digs. Johnson served three aces on 19-of-21 serving.

Mount Ayr travels to Murray on Oct. 28 to take on the Lady Mustangs in the Class 1A Region 3 quarterfinals.

Diagonal 1

MURRAY — Upset-minded Diagonal came out here Tuesday and took the first game from Murray, but the Lady Mustangs rebounded for a 22-25, 25-8, 25-9, 25-13 win over the Maroonettes to advance to the Class 1A Region 3 quarterfinals.

“Not mentally prepared,” Murray head coach Jerry Shields said. “I give a lot of credit to Diagonal in the first set. They came out ready to play. We missed too many serves and only had one ace in the first set. our passing wasn’t where it needed to be tonight.”

Jade Lecy led the Lady Mustangs with 13 kills and five blocks. Hannah Barber, in her return to the Murray lineup, recorded 12 kills. Madison Gonseth had 11 kills, while Shelby Myers added seven and served three aces on 17-of-18 serving.

Tricia Cena and McKenzie Case each served two aces, while Chellsea Jones added one ace. Brandi Gilbert set 37 assists. Jones led the team with eight digs, while Case had five.

Murray hosts Mount Ayr on Oct. 28 in the regional quarterfinals.

East Union 1

MARTENSDALE — Martensdale-St. Marys defeated East Union here Tuesday in the first round of Class 1A regional play, 25-15, 22-25, 25-23, 25-13.

“The team played hard and never gave up,” East Union head coach Gail Thatcher said. “Each member of the team stepped up to help the team.”

Emily Eckels had eight kills to lead a balanced attack at the net, as McKayle Dudney and Kali Mertens each added seven kills. Danielle Riley finished with four kills. Dudney and Mertens each had one solo block.

Eckels served 12-of-13 with two aces. Mara Weis, Rylee Mitchell and Reagan Brown each served one ace. Katlin Weinkoetz served 14-15 and Dudney finished 13-13. Rylee Mitchell set 22 assists, while Brown led the team with 16 digs.

Martensdale-St. Marys advances to play Grand View Christian on Oct. 28 in the quarterfinals.
