Veterans honored at rededication ceremony

From Dennis Brown

Shannon City

2014 marks the fourth year of the Civil War sesquicentennial. On Saturday afternoon, Sept. 27, a rededication of the Civil War monument in McKinley Park was enacted by the son of Union veterans of the Civil War Colonel William H. Kinsman Camp No. 23, Carson, Iowa.

Utilizing the same grand army of the republic service book used for the original dedication of the statue over a century ago, the group had also performed the same duty in Bedford and Mount Ayr earlier that day, in rededicating those cities’ monuments. Many thanks for a job “well done.”

Thanks also to out to Mark Huff for his last minute adjustment of “Old Glory,” Mayor Warren Woods for his words of welcome, the local VFW Post for serving as the color guard, and all those folks who turned out to witness this inspiring event on a beautiful early autumn day. And to the unknown artillerist who provided the cannon fire at such an appropriate time, as we continue to remember all of those who gave their lives in the cause of freedom.
