Nodaway Valley captures SW Valley tourney crown

CORNING — Nodaway Valley defeated Exira/EHK in the championship match here Saturday in the Southwest Valley Tournament, 21-17, 20-22, 15-7.

The Wolverines knocked off host Southwest Valley in the semifinals with a 21-15, 19-21, 15-13 win. The host Timberwolves defeated Essex for third place, 21-19, 21-14.

Nodaway Valley posted wins over Lenox and Essex to reach the semifinals.

“I am very proud of the girls,” Nodaway Valley head coach Hannah West said. “They came to the tournament with the drive and intensity that it takes to win. They were very focused throughout the entire day.”

Sidney Hohertz led the Wolverines with 29 kills in the tournament and added nine digs with five ace serves. Emily Schildberg had 17 kills and two blocks. Corrine Jones set 26 assists and Josie Carter set 35 assists. Paige McElfish added 18 kills.

For Southwest Valley, Marie Palmer led the way with 34 kills, 23 digs, three blocks and 10 ace serves. Jade Petersen added 15 kills and six ace serves. Lexi Bronner finished with 14 kills and 15 digs. Danica Sunderman recorded 11 kills, while Kim Hults finished with 19 digs. Taylor Damewood set 43 assists and served five aces.

Lenox lost both of its matches in pool play, falling to Nodaway Valley 21-13, 10-21, 15-11 and to Essex 21-12, 20-22, 15-11.

Aurora Arevalo had 10 kills and 13 digs for the Tigers, while Katie Dukes added six kills with 12 digs. Jacy Stoaks finished with five kills and Regan Tullberg had three. Bethany Christensen set 13 assists.

Bedford Tourney

BEDFORD — Mount Ayr took fourth place at a competitive Bedford Tournament here on Saturday.

“We played close games, but just couldn’t finish to get the last three wins of the day,” Mount Ayr head coach Tori Braby said. “We are learning to compete this year and that is just what we are doing.”

Kelcie Shields led the Raiderettes with 43 kills for the day to go with 14 total blocks for the tournament. Allie Shields added 27 kills. Macy Larsen set 45 assists and Alyssa Johnson finished with 37 assists. Blair Glendenning finished with 54 digs for the tournament.

Murray, meanwhile, lost its first three games of the day — and of the season — before closing the day with a win over East Union.

Hannah Barber led the Lady Mustangs with 26 kills and 25 digs, adding three blocks. Jade Lecy recorded 14 kills with four blocks and 14 digs. Madison Gonseth had 13 kills and four blocks.

Shelby Myers served 19-of-21 with three aces and McKenzie Case served 24-25 with four aces. Brandi Gilbert set 35 assists and Courtney Titus had nine assists.

“Didn’t play well in the first match as our setter got sick right before the game, but that’s not an excuse,” Murray head coach Jerry Shields said. “Our defense really let us down today. Our setters could not get the ball to the net to be able to attack. Serving was not great, either.”

East Union went 0-5 for the day.

McKayle Dudney had 15 kills in the tournament for the Eagles to go with six blocks. Chay Blondowski added 12 kills with six blocks. Rylee Mitchell set 38 assists to lead the Eagles.

ACA 3, Diagonal 0

ANKENY — Diagonal fell to Ankeny here on Thursday, 25-6, 25-15, 25-9.

“The girls played very hard and had many long rallies,” Diagonal head coach Allison Hajek said. “The girls played with a lot of intensity. Serving was great this game. We had three aces and only three missed serves.”

Megan Davenport and Allison Norris each recorded three kills, while Norris, Jaci Haidsiak and Cassie Lohmann each served one ace.

Haidsiak set eight assists. Kaitlyn Klommhaus had eight digs, as did sister Kasydi Klommhaus. Each Klommhaus sister finished with one kill. Norris recorded four digs and Davenport finished with three.

Murray 3, ICA 1

MURRAY — Murray improved to 5-0 in the Bluegrass Conference with a 25-21, 22-25, 25-19, 25-12 win over Iowa Christian Academy here Thursday.

Hannah Barber had a strong night at the net with 31 kills and two blocks. Madison Gonseth recorded six kills with two blocks. Jade Lecy had six kills and four blocks. Shelby Myers finished with seven kills.

The Lady Mustangs finished with 18 aces as a team, led by McKenzie Case with four. Myers, Barber and Gonseth each recorded two ace serves. Brandi Gilbert set 41 assists. Case had a team-high 10 digs.

“Had another very good night at the net and the service line,” Murray head coach Jerry Shields said. “ICA is a very good young team and gave us a battle that we needed going into the Bedford Tournament.”
