Crest Area for Life

Crest Area for Life met 7:30 p.m. Sept. 23 Holy Spirit hall. President Betty Baker opened up the meeting with the right to life prayer. Five members were in attendance.

Secretary Terry Madison read the minutes from the August meeting. They were corrected and approved.

In absence of the treasurer, Meg Crawford gave the treasurer’s report. It was approved.

Velma Riegel sent out 13 baby congratulatory cards.

Crawford gave a political report.

Under old business, Betty Baker gave a report there was good attendance at the booth at the SWCC Awareness Day Sept. 10 at the college.

Under new business, there was discussion on the trapshoot fundraiser Sept. 27 at Three Mile Gun Range.

Life Chain in Des Moines will be 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Meet at the Assembly of God Church on Merle Hay Road.

The annual meeting will be Oct. 28. The business meeting will be at 7 and the program at 7:30 p.m. Crawford will get the newsletter out.

The nominating committee will be Betty Baker and Velma Riegel.

Rich Madison made a motion, seconded by Meg Crawford, to adjourn the meeting.

Elzevir Reading Circle

The first meeting of the new year for Elzevir Reading Circle was held Sept. 12 at the home of Alice Bowers.

President Terry Ammon opened the meeting with a quote from the September issue of Readers’ Digest by Bill and Melinda Gates reminding us of good things in life. Roll call was answered with members telling of a memory from our first day of school.

Minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. The treasurer’s report was given and annual membership fees were collected.

The GFWC/Iowa Southwest District Convention was held Sept. 19 in Castana. The Iowa theme for the year is “Soaring to New Heights with GFWC.” The president’s special project is “Feed America” or “Feed the Children.”

Motion to adjourn was made by Alice Bowers, seconded by Mary Burg and motion passed. Members recited Mary Stewart’s club collect.

The president and members read the Constitution and the amended by-laws. Members should bring their reading club reports to the next meeting.

The hostess served peach pie. The next meeting will be Oct. 10 at Angela Pullen’s. Marilyn Lee will present the program.

Crest Area Theatre

The monthly meeting of the Board of Directors of Crest Area Theatre was held Sept. 2 in the green room at SWCC PAC. The meeting was called to order at 7 p.m.

Plans were made for CAT’s next performance which will be The Regifters, a holiday comedy to be presented Dec. 5, 6, and 7.

Auditions for the cast of four men and five women will be Oct. 7 and 9 in the SWCC auditorium which is in the same building as the YMCA.

Crest Area Theatre seeks to provide an opportunity for creative activity and entertainment in the theatre and serve the community by combining the talents of local artists for dramatic, cultural and artistic developments. Membership is open to all, and CAT is always looking for new members. Meetings are held the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. in the green room of the SWCC PAC.

Ladies Literary Circle

Creston Ladies Literary Circle met Sept. 26 at the home of Midge Scurlock with 18 members answering roll call with meaningful quotes.

President Linda Hartsock presided at the business meeting. Treasurer’s report by Dyan Huffman was read and approved.

Ann Driskell of the Program Committee introduced Judy Woods who reviewed “Orphan Train” by Christina Baker-Kline.

The next meeting of Ladies Literary Circle will be Oct. 10 at the home of Marcia Fulton with Pat Bishop reviewing “Childhood” by Bill Cosby.

Iowa Alpha Sigma

Iowa Alpha Sigma Master Chapter No. 1632 met Thursday evening Sept. 25 for its 88th meeting at The Olive Branch in Greenfield.

Members repeated the Beta Sigma Phi grace then everyone ate their evening meal. A short informal meeting was held.

Former member Joyce Hoepker sent pictures and a short letter telling of her trip to China with her son Randy. She also shared some of the things going on in her life.

A thank you was received from Cheryl McClure thanking the chapter for the 50th wedding anniversary celebration, saying the cake was delicious and for the red rose given to her at the last meeting.

A letter was received from international on insurance.

Members are to meet 2 p.m. Oct. 7 at the assisted living in Creston to provide some entertainment for the residents.

Norma has received the membership list from international.

Martha McAuley will be hostess Oct. 14 and will also have the program.

Afton Federated Garden Club

Afton Federated Garden Club met 10 a.m. Sept. 12 at the garage of Judy Harman’s home.

Shirley Wallace presented her program on design by instructing members on how to make stepping stones.

A picnic, scheduled to be at Afton Park, was moved to the Afton Community Center because of the weather.

After lunch, President Vicki Reese called the meeting to order with everyone repeating the Pledge of Allegiance and all reciting the club collect. Roll call was answered by 14 members.

Minutes for the August meeting were read. Gwen Sandeman made and Pauline McCoy seconded a motion to accept the report. As Bev Rowe was unable to attend, Reese read the report for August and September from Bev. It was decided to wait for the next meeting to present any bills.

Members discussed plans for the annual fall Luncheon, and it was decided to bring fall decorations for the tables to be put together there. Each member wrote down what they plan to fix for the luncheon.

Door prizes were discussed and decided upon. Wallace and Judy Weese brought copies of the completed cookbook to view.

Reese reminded the club that there will be election of officers at the November meeting.

Where to have a Christmas luncheon was discussed, and it was agreed to meet at 11:30 a.m. at Diagonal Fireside Restaurant again this year. Wallace volunteered to call for reservations.

Donna Thomas made a motion to adjourn, Audrey McDonald seconded it. All recited the conservation pledge.

Refreshments were served by hostesses Polly McCoy and Carolyn Hubatka. The next meeting will be the annual fall luncheon Oct. 3. Meet at 9 to 9:30 a.m. at the Lorimor Community Center to prepare for the 11 a.m. luncheon.

Kiwanis

The weekly Kiwanis meeting was held 12:05 p.m. Tuesday at The Windrow with 22 members and two guests, including Lt. Gov. Division No.13 Bob Dunaway, who installed the new officers and board members for 2014-15. Chris Frederickson, president, presided. Ed Ritter did the prayer, and Craig Mittag was finemaster.

The program was Chris Mansour with the READS program for Creston Schools and St. Malachy. The club presented the READS program $450 for books for all the first grade students at Christmas time.

The Keep a Kid Warm coat giveaway that Kiwanis is sponsoring will be Oct. 16 at the First United Methodist Church.

New officers are: President Jane Lowe, Vice President Chris Eaton, President-elect Craig Mittag, Secretary Victoria Brammer and Treasurer Sandy Hysell.

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary met Wednesday.

Canasta winners were Gwen Sandeman, first; Connie Bailey, second; and Mary Kline, third.

Marilyn Larimore won the door prize.

Larimore will be hostess for cards and chatter Wednesday, Oct. 8.
