Club news

Mary Circle

Mary Circle of First Christian Church met Sept. 18 at the home of Marilyn Larimore. Twelve members were present.

President Fils opened the meeting with the Disciple Women’s prayer, and any plans for Balloon Days.

Margaret read the treasurer’s minutes.

New business discussed several members will be attending the Platte Center Church guest day 2 p.m. Sept. 24.

Plans are being made for the salad luncheon 12:30 p.m. Oct. 2 at the church.

Coffee Sunday at the church was Sept. 21.

The meeting was adjourned.

Florence Willets gave the lesson on “When the going gets tough.”

At the end of the meeting, the hostess served dessert and various treats.

The next meeting will be Oct. 16 at the home of Alice Bowers.

The Book Club

The Book Club met Sept. 8 at the home of Pat Pokorny with nine members present. President Shonda Deranleau called the meeting to order. Minutes from the May meeting were read and approved. Money was collected for dues.

Meg Crawford handed out the 2014-15 yearbooks. Roll call was answered with books read during the summer.

The theme for this year is “People Who Inspire Us by Overcoming Hardships.” In keeping with the theme, Deb Richardson reviewed the book “The God I Love,” a memoir by Joni Eareckson Tada.

The hostess served refreshments at the close of the meeting.

The next meeting will be Oct. 6 at the home of Dorothy McNaught with Meg Crawford giving the book review.

Creston UMW

The Executive Committee of Creston United Methodist Women met 9 a.m. Aug. 28 in fellowship hall. Co-President Susan Weight called the meeting to order with eight members present. Beth Perry read scripture from I Corinthians 12:12-13 and read a reading from the Upper Room titled “Part of the Whole.”

There was correspondence from Angel Tree, which is a program of prison fellowship, embracing children of prisoners and two thank you notes.

Minutes of the May executive were reviewed and the treasurer’s report for June, July and August was reviewed. $125 was paid to the church for a camp fee. It was voted to give $100 to Food for Life and present a $50 love offering at the district meeting in Oskaloosa Sept. 12. The September circle meetings will collect for the school nurses fund.

There were reports on social action, membership and the reading program.

Jerrie Henderson had contacted Bidwell Riverside for another work date, but had not heard back from them.

There will be a continental breakfast for the unit meeting Sept. 4. The officers will prepare the meal with Kay Ritter doing a casserole and rolls. The program was titled
"Becoming Green." There have been two new refrigerators and a stove purchased for the kitchen. They will be installed after some wiring and painting is done.

Oct. 19 is the UMW fundraising dinner. Sign-up sheets for food will be available at the September circle meetings. There are many school bags, birthing kits and layette kits ready for the in-gathering in November.

The Bible verse for August was Romans 8:28.

The UMW Unit Meeting was held 9:30 a.m. Sept. 4. A continental breakfast was enjoyed by all. After the brunch, Ann Driskell welcomed everyone and introduced Rev. Gideon Gallo who led the women in singing and presented the program referencing the book “Afire With God.”

Susan Weight called the business meeting to order. There were nine members from Morning Circle and nine members from Evening Circle and guests Linda Swanson, a district officer, Sharon Glick and Rev. Gallo. Rosalie Denton read the minutes of the May unit meeting and the treasurer’s report was given. For devotions, Beth Perry read scripture from Psalms 145:17-21 and read “Connecting but not Communicating” from the Upper Room and closed with a prayer.

Some of the same items discussed at executive were presented at the unit meeting.
There was an invitation from Platte Center Church for a meeting 2 p.m. Sept. 24. Pecans will be available for the fundraising dinner on Oct. 19, and there will also be cards made by the Missions Committee available that day.

The circles all met Sept. 18.

Morning Circle met at the church at 9:30 a.m. with 13 members and one guest present. Colleen Brotherton was hostess, Beth Perry lead devotions, and Susan Weight lead the meeting. Food sign-up sheets for the fundraising dinner on the 19th were circulated. Judy Kading will be the chairwoman of this circle next year.

Velma Riegel gave the program “Calling to Mission in our Time.”

The Young Women’s group also met at 5 p.m. with three present. They also made dinner plans. Kay Ritter gave a program on prison ministry and how to help inmates after they have been released from prison.

Evening Circle met at 7 p.m. with 10 members present. Sandy McNichols led the meeting. Election of officers was held with Rosalie Denton being named chairman again.

Funds were collected for the school nurse fund.

Bobi Wooden gave the program “Calling to Mission in our Time.”

All circles closed with the Bible verse for September from Deuteronomy 6:4-9.

P.E.O. Chapter AZ

The regular business meeting of P.E.O. Chapter AZ was held Sept. 16 at Salem Lutheran Church with Judy Eklund serving as hostess and Elaine Fargo as co-hostess.

The chaplin read devotions from Psalms 27: 7-14.

Ten members responded to roll call.

The corresponding secretary read a letter of acceptance of invitation to membership from Emma Johnson. Transfer of acceptance for Sherry Taylor to Chapter MS.

The next meeting will be a social meeting Oct. 7 at Diagonal restaurant.

The next regular meeting will be Oct. 21 with Chris Van Gelder as hostess.

Judy Eklund encouraged members to read their September-October P.E.O. Record which included a P.E.O. scholar and sister named to the prestigious 30 under 30 list.

Jean Ide gave the program talking about her great-grandmother’s many moves across the country and her large family.

After the program, Eklund and Fargo served refreshments.

Bancroft History Assembly

Bancroft History Assembly met Sept. 15 at the golf club. Nine members and three life members were in attendance.

Joann Nurnberg, president, called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. The inspirational thought was “Change will always be a part of life, so embrace it.”

Roll call was answered by sharing the title of a favorite book. Minutes from the May 5 meeting were read by Sandy Oswald and approved after a correction was made. Avis Hainline presented the treasurer’s report.

Dues were collected along with the loose change for the IFWC/lowa endowment fund. Marisue Lewis and Dora Coen volunteered to the calling as Barb Bjorn is moving to Des Moines. It was decided to meet at Creston Plaza community room in January as there is a conflict with at the hospital.

Kay Raymond and Avis Hainline went to where the historical things are stored and are not sure if the two scrapbooks will fit in that area. This will be discussed later.

Discussion was held on projects for the year. Continue to bring money for gas cards, etc., at this time.

The fifth annual Southwest District GFWC was Sept. 19 at Costana. The title was “Soaring to New Heights.”

The club collect closed the meeting.

The constitution and by-laws were presented by Peg Anderson. A program of Bancroft history was presented by Beth Perry.

The next meeting will be Oct. 6. Hostess will be Peg Anderson. Dora Coen will present a book review on “Miss Dreamsville Collier County Women’s Literary Society.”

Kiwanis

The weekly Kiwanis meeting was held 12:05 p.m. Tuesday at The Windrow with 24 members. Chris Frederickson, president, presided. Brad Lorenzen did the prayer and was greeter, and Paul Lorenz was finemaster.

The annual meeting was held honoring 92 years since the club was founded and received its charter from Kiwanis International. New officers and board members were elected and birthday cake was served.

Keep A Kid Warm was announced and will be held 6 p.m. Oct. 16 at the United Methodist Church in Creston. Coats will be available for children up to 16 years old.

This years pork chop dinner was a success and sold out.

Union County Genealogical Society

Union County Genealogical Society met Sept. 22 at Gibson Memorial Library. Seven members and three visitors were present. President Jane Briley conducted the annual beginning genealogy workshop assisted by other members. Forms, printed resources, internet resources and examples of documents and research were shared.

The decision was made to proceed with the project of compiling a digital book of cemetery records.

The Oct. 27 meeting is at 6 p.m. at Gibson Memorial Library with a program on Kansas research.

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary met Sept. 24.

Canasta winners were Mary Kline, first; Loretta Kelly, second; and Barb Veitz, third.

Janet Kessler won the door prize.

Loretta Kelly will be hostess for cards and chatter Wednesday.
