Aid available for property with storm damage

Because of a large amount of storm damage across southwest Iowa during the summer and early fall months, several Southwest Iowa counties were declared by Gov. Terry Branstad eligible for State of Iowa Individual Assistance Program. In addition, the Southwest Iowa Long Term Recovery Committee (SWILTRC) has some funding available for those who did not qualify for the state’s program, but would fall below the 300 percent of poverty guidelines.

To qualify, individuals must have filled out a complete application with the State of Iowa Individual Assistance Case Management provider: MATURA, West Central Community Action, South Central Iowa Community Action Program and New Opportunities, Inc.

These programs are meant to help people recover, while the dollars are not as large as we would like to have, it is hopeful our outreach will help alleviate recovery efforts for those affected.

To qualify for the State Individual Assistance Program, individuals must complete an application with a community action provider, and have income less than 200 percent of federal poverty level (see chart).

State assistance for eligible recipients is up to $5,000. To qualify for the SWILTRC program, individuals must have completed the application for state individual assistance and not have received state Iowa monies and have an income below the 300 percent of federal poverty level.

Eligible recipients may receive up to $1,500 to aid in their recovery.

While this disaster is not as apparent as a tornado, flooding is rarely covered by insurance and the need is great.

To donate to assist in recovery efforts, send a donation to the Southwest Iowa Long Term Recovery Committee, 1909 E. Summit St., Red Oak, IA 51566.

For people in Union County, contact Matura Action Corporation to fill out the application for the programs available.
