Electric grid in Union, Ringgold counties undergoing upgrade

People in Arispe, Tingley, Shannon City, Ellston and Beaconsfield will continue to see reliable electrical service because of major upgrades in the area.

This summer, Alliant Energy started building a new substation that will serve customers in and around these communities. Crews will finish installation of the new substation, 82 power poles and 3.5 miles of power lines this fall.

A substation takes electricity from the high-voltage transmission lines and distributes it through the community. The new unit will support future growth in the area.

“We are replacing the old equipment before it causes problems, this way we can continue to provide reliable power for all our customers,” said Matt Higgins, manager of customer operations. “This has been a big project for us, and represents an investment of more than $2.1 million.”

Alliant Energy’s 2014 Power Iowa Plan includes approximately $130 million of planned investments. This includes upgrading overhead and underground electric lines, electric substations and natural gas infrastructure.
