GRMC Auxiliary
The Greater Regional Medical Center Auxiliary board held its regular meeting 10 a.m. Aug. 11 in the MAP Conference Room. No meeting was scheduled for the month of July.
Annette Rice and 12 members were present for this August meeting. Lois Daub called the meeting to order.
Jessica Duncan gave the financial report stating finances appear to be in good shape. Copies of the report were distributed to board members. Members then voted to allocate approximately $500 for replacement or placement of new silk plants in various areas of GRMC beginning with surgery waiting area, lower entry areas and solarium. Nancy Hawks made a motion to carry and Ronda Giles seconded the motion. Motion was unanimous in favor of $500 allotment.
The board also agreed to the purchase of 100 battery light stars. The stars will be a new fundraiser and will be displayed during the holiday season throughout GRMC. Individuals may purchase a star for a loved one or in memory of an individual. It is not specific to hospice. Money raised from the sales of the stars will go to a specified project to be announced at the time of the fundraiser.
LouAnn Snodgrass gave the administrative report. Dr. Epp (acute care) has been appointed medical director of ER at GRMC. Dr. Osterbrink will be re-establishing the vein clinic. More attention will be given to promote the availability of GRMC two general surgeons and two ortho surgeons to the community. Becky Baker, ARNP/FNP, will be utilized in the clinic to help treat patients appearing without a regular doctor or those unable to see doctor on call. Patients wishing to establish with a new physician are now being reviewed by one employee. This should expedite the process.
Cori the camel will be circulating throughout the complex. Cori represents the four values envisioned for GRMC: compassion, ownership, respect and integrity.
Ann Ferguson was introduced as the auxiliary historian.
Gift shop reports new items have arrived and more items to follow. New bookmarkers will soon be distributed in gift bags. The paper bookmarkers will promote volunteers information on one side and upcoming fundraisers on the other side. A tailgate party in the gift shop is also being planned for later in the month.
Betty Wallace has been named GRMC auxiliary Shining Star. She will be honored at the annual conference Oct. 9 in Des Moines.
The meeting adjourned at 11:10 a.m.

TOPS 1338
TOPS 1338 met Aug. 4 at the Methodist Church in Creston. Weigh-in was at 5 p.m. with the meeting starting at 5:30 p.m. Ten members had weighed in with a 4.25 pound net loss. Shellie Sullivan was the week’s best loser with Lola Baucom in second place.
Fines from July 28 went to Carol Sheldahl, and the attendance cup was won by Bev Lyons.
The program was given by Teresa Kienen and her daughter Faithlyn. Teresa is the daughter of Sheldahl and is on missionary leave from their home in Iraq.
Teresa spoke of her personal weight challenges and maintaining a healthy diet for her family by learning the local customs and culture and what available foods are in Iraq and Romania where they had once served.
On Aug. 11, TOPS Creston 1338 met at 5:30 p.m. Ten members weighed in with Mitzie Cellan best loser and Bev Lyons second. Fines from Aug. 4 went to the treasury. Marisue Lewis won the Squares contest. The Red Can Challenge was to use small bowls and plates.
Installation of officers was conducted by A. Thompson who will be leader again in the coming year. Each new officer received a TOPS pin and a rose. Members ate a fresh fruit salad made of the fruits mentioned during installation.
TOPS 1338 meets Mondays with weigh-in at 5 p.m. and the meeting starting at 5:30 p.m. Anyone is welcome to come to a meeting if interested.
Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary
Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary met Aug. 13.
Canasta winners were Janet Kessler, first; Barb Vietz, second; and Rose Blakesley, third.
Maxine May won the door prize.
Janet Kessler was hostess for cards and chatter Wednesday.
Beta Sigma Phi
Iowa Alpha Sigma Master Chapter No. 1632 met Aug. 14th at the home of Marilyn Blazek.
President Marilyn Larimore called the meeting to order. Roll call was answered with members telling of their September plans.
Minutes of the previous meeting/social were read and approved as read.
Official – The Torch has been received on the internet. Large print versions of the Book of Beta Sigma Phi and Invitation to Life will be available by the end of August on a print-on-demand basis through Amazon. Rushing material had been received by Membership Chairman Norma Putnam. International Convention will be held Aug. 4-7, 2016, in Kansas City, Mo.
Unofficial – Members brought letters they had written to a former member, Norma Walker. These will be mailed to her and her husband to read. Members will be sending birthday cards to a former member Freda Shields in Mount Ayr. Cheryl and Gene McClure will be celebrating their 50th anniversary Sept. 6.
Treasurer Pat Fils gave her report. Membership dues are now due.
New business – The yardstick form had been filled in and mailed to international and the chapter received a three-star rating. There was discussion that the chapter meetings are to start at 7 p.m. and the social committee can change the time for chapter socials, if desired.
Aug. 28 will be a ‘Beginning Day’ social at the Fireside restaurant in Diagonal at 6 p.m. with husbands included.
The Sept. 11 meeting will be at Summit House with Dorothy Eyberg as hostess and Pat Fils and Loretta Kelly will have the programs.
Larimore read from the gray book then finished with quotes from Andy Rooney.
Meeting adjourned.

Afton Federated Garden Club
Afton Federated Garden Club met Aug. 8 at Afton Community Center with Carolyn Hubatka as hostess. Vice President Iris Smith called the meeting to order with members repeating the Pledge of Allegiance and Club Collect. Roll call was answered by 10 members.
Minutes for the July meeting were read. Shirley Wallace made and Karen Van Buskirk seconded a motion to accept the report. There wasn’t a treasurer’s report as Bev Rowe was unable to attend.
Smith handed out pamphlets on the gypsy moth, and Pauline McCoy shared a copy of “Gardeners Corner.”
Thank you to those who entered their flowers and plants at the Union County Flower Show in Afton. There were 14 more exhibits this year than in 2013. Also, thank you to all AFGC members who helped with the show.
After discussion on prices and methods, McCoy made a motion to have Petzniks cut and bind AFGC cookbooks. Marilyn Larimore seconded the motion.
Shirley Wallace brought several samples of hypetufa projects so members could decide what to make at the September meeting. She answered questions about materials and costs. Wallace reminded members to wear gloves.
Smith asked for a list of what each of member planned to bring for AFGC’s September picnic and October fall luncheon. After some discussion, it was decided to bring a vegetable or fruit dish for the picnic and discuss the fall luncheon menu more at the September meeting.
Karen Van Buskirk and Wallace volunteered to be in charge of invitations for the October fall luncheon. They will get together with President Vicki Reese to finalize all details. The fall luncheon will be Oct. 3.
Judy Weese made a motion to adjourn, and Judy Harman seconded the motion. All recited the conservation pledge.
A program on invasive trees and plants was given by Carolyn Hubatka. She read the poem “Trees” by Joyce Kilmer.
Refreshments were served by Hubatka.
The next meeting will be Sept. 12. Meet at Judy Harman’s for hypertufa making at 10 a.m., then lunch in the shelterhouse in the Afton Park; a meeting will follow at Afton Community Center.

Kent Dinner Club
Kent Dinner Club met Aug. 14 at The Windrow. Ten people attended.
The next meeting will be 5:30 p.m. Sept. 11 at The Windrow.

Kiwanis
The weekly Kiwanis meeting was held 12:05 p.m. Tuesday at The Windrow with 22 members. Chris Frederickson, president, presided. Korina Loudon did the prayer, and Roger Lanning was finemaster.
The program was Chris Frederickson who discussed the hobby of post card collecting. She shared some of her collection with almost all of them being more than 100 years old. Post cards can be a factual history of people lives.
The annual pork chop dinner will be Sept. 18 at McKinley Park. Members now have the $8 per meal tickets to sell. This event is a fundraiser for the local Kiwanis, Lions and Rotary clubs. Check out this event and more at the Creston Kiwanis Facebook page.
