Donald “Pete” Trenkle, 90, of Creston died Aug. 12, 2014, at Crest Haven Care Centre.
Celebration of Life Mass will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. The Rev. Ken Halbur will officiate. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Theodore J. Martens Post No. 1797 of Creston V.F.W. Open visitation will be 3 to 7:30 p.m. Friday with family present 5 to 7:30 and a 5 p.m. prayer service at Powers Funeral Home, junction of highways 34 and 25. Donald Raymond “Pete” Trenkle, son of Margaret Theresa (Repplinger) and John Henry Trenkle, was born July 16, 1924, in Union County.
Don served in the United States Army during World War II. He was in the 44th Tank Battelion, later becoming the 95th.
On April 4, 1959, Don married Doris Darlene Overholtzer in Grant City, Mo.
Don owned and operated his own grain hauling business for 30 years. He also drove a Star Mail route for the U.S. Post Office and retired from many years of work at Green Valley Chemical.
When Doris’s health was failing in 2003, they moved to the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. Don worked at the Veteran’s Home Chapel two days a week.
They returned to Creston in 2011.
Don was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church and Theodore J. Martens V.F.W Post No. 1797.
Don is survived by his daughters, Mary Jane (husband Butch) Bishop and Brenda Norman of Atlantic; stepsons, Mike Brown of Tulsa, Okla., and Bruce Brown of Creston; grandchildren, Astra Bishop (Waylon) of Creston and Aric Bishop of Clive; step-grandson, Joey Goodrich of Kent; two great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; sister Betty Jean Schowalter; sisters-in-law, Virginia Luther Hillman and Arlene Overholtzer; and many nieces and nephews.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; wife in 2011; brothers, Bill, Joe, Ed, Lee and Bud Trenkle; and sisters, Irene Miller, Mary Worsley, Lela Caccamise and Kathryn Sewell.
