Sweet corn time is upon us

I know I've been getting my sweet corn fix taken care of as of late. You only have a couple of months to take advantage of the fresh, off the cob stuff. You can always can or freeze it, but it is just not the same as pulling off the husk, heating and letting the butter flow over the fresh golden ear of corn. All the spring rains have made for a good crop of sweet corn this year. Get it while it's hot!

McKinley

This Saturday is the McKinley Park Festival. The events start at 3:30 p.m. There is plenty of fun and food for the whole family — everything from a kids fishing contest to the annual talent show. Word has it that Mr. Riley will be here to personally MC the talent show. The night will finish off with a wonderful fireworks show shot off by the Creston Shooters. So come out and join the fun. There is a hog roast that only costs $5, so come out and enjoy a nice evening in McKinley Park.

Sir Paul

I did see Paul McCartney a couple of weeks back and would highly recommend it to anyone. It's the best show I have seen. If you are going to spend money to see a concert, this is the one to do. He played a 39-song set and didn't leave the stage for a swig of water until time for the encores. The concert lasted almost three hours. Not bad for a 72 year old.

Iowa State Fair

Most of the county fairs are now in the books for the year. Now it is onto the Iowa State Fair starting Aug. 7.

Don't forget to buy your tickets in advance. You can save yourself a few dollars on the gate admission. If the advanced forecast holds, we may be in for some pretty good weather during the 10-day run of the fair. There is nothing like a corn dog or turkey leg at the state fair to make your day.

40 Years

I had a chance to visit many of my "old classmates" this past weekend with the 40th reunion of the class of 1974. I went to Lincoln Southeast High, which had almost 500 members in its class. About 140 made it back for the reunion. I had a great time talking to people who are scattered across the United States and even one old friend who works in Australia. One of my classmates was an Olympic gymnast and could still do front flips and cartwheels like he was 16. The four evenings of talking and catching up went real fast. I could have used a couple of more days to get a few more stories.

Krejci

Sorry to see that Bill and Teresa Krejci are leaving the Creston area. Both Krejcis have been at SWCC for a long time. I'm going to miss all those stories Bill brings back from his world travels with USA baseball. Did you know he even coached major leaguer Joe Mauer once upon a time?

High School

Starting Aug. 4, Sports Editor Scott Vicker will have stories on this year's CNA High School sports award winners. The male and female athlete of the year and runner-ups will be announced that week. I know he has had a tough time picking this year's winner. The debate has been on going for the past three weeks.

Football

The NFL camps opened up this week and we are only 10 days away from the NCAA football preseason workouts starting up. The first NFL game is Sunday, Aug. 3 with the New York Giants and Buffalo Bills leading off the preseason. The NCAA games don't get going until the opening weekend of Aug. 30.
