Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary met July 16.

Canasta winners were Mary Kline, first; Wanda Nash, second; and Maxine May, third.

Barb Veitz won the door prize.

Marilyn Larimore was hostess for cards and chatter Wednesday.

Friends of the Library

Friends of the Library met Monday in the genealogy room at the library.

Board members present were Connie Harden, Mary Morris and Kay Raymond. New members who were welcomed to the board are: Gladys Drey, Ryan Kissell, Ann Ross, and Theresa Stull. Library Director Marilyn Ralls was also in attendance.

Ralls reported the summer reading programs were very successful. Three hundred children participated and many adults were involved, as well. The reading programs end today.

The minutes were approved as written, and the treasurer’s report was placed on file for the auditor.

A thank you note was read from Mary Lee Foltz thanking us for including her in the garden walk preview night and dinner.

FOL-sponsored Afterthoughts teen book club is having a Bring a Buddy event at noon Saturday at Three Mile Lake. Walking tacos will be served.

Two-hundred eleven people attended magician’s Keith West Show, and 202 people were present when The Blank Park Zoo brought animals to Creston. Both events were sponsored by FOL.

FOL membership drive begins Aug. 2.

FOL will again sponsor a teen dance to kick off the beginning of school. It will be held Aug. 9 at Lincoln School. Middle school students will start off the evening from 7 to 9 p.m. and the high school students’ time will be from 9:30 to 11:30 p.m.

The used book sale will be held during Balloon Days Sept. 19-20. More information will follow.

It was suggested we buy our own banquet tables. This motion will be discussed at the August meeting.

Mandy Kolesik, fundraiser from Marketing Kinetics, spoke to the board with updates.

The next meeting will be Aug. 18.

Creston Porcelain Painters

The Creston Porcelain Painters meeting was held July 11 at Prairie View. Regular business was completed.

In June, Creston Porcelain Painters exhibited at restored Creston Depot art gallery where 350 to 400 people viewed the month-long exhibit.

Discussion covered doing a holiday exhibit in conjunction with Creston’s Christmas activities.

Paul Lewing, a noted potter, is willing to come for a seminar. More information to come regarding cost, supplies and number of people interested in attending the workshop.

Current events and schedules include Union County Fair entries and state fair entries Aug. 7-17.

Cheryl Bolton gave a program of seminars she recently attended including results of her china art.

The next meeting will be 10 a.m. Aug. 1 at Prairie View. Anyone interested in this art is welcome to attend.

Afton Federated Garden Club

Afton Federated Garden Club met July 11 at Afton Community Center with Marilyn Larimore and Gwen Sandeman as hostesses. President Vicki Johnson called the meeting to order with members repeating the Pledge of Allegiance and club collect.  Roll call was answered by 13 members.

Minutes for the April meeting were read and approved. Bev Rowe gave the treasurer’s report, and it will be filed as noted.

AFGC correspondence chairperson Donna Thomas sent birthday cards to Marilyn Larimore, Nelda Herzberg and Judy Weese.

Johnson thanked Judy Weese at Creston and Loretta Kelly at Afton for getting National Garden Week posters signed by their mayors and displaying them for our club.

It was decided to wait until next year to do a flower blitz to try to get more people interested in entering their flowers at Union County Fair. Members volunteered to help with the flower show check-in at the Union County Fair July 21, and for presenting checks and clean-up July 24.

Johnson, Weese and Shirley Wallace will check on final prices for cookbooks, then get them printed, pick up all supplies, so the cookbooks can be put together at the August meeting. A motion was made by Polly McCoy and seconded by Weese to pay Wallace for the ink she has used.

The club’s Sept. 10 picnic and hypertufa projects were discussed, and Wallace, who is demonstrating doing hyperfufa, is going to bring some examples to the August meeting. Final plans for the September meeting will be finalized then.

Johnson thanked everyone for the “goodies” they brought for FGCI district meeting.  Wallace played the tape she have made of Johnson’s speech about AFGC for those who weren’t able to attend.

At the FGCI State meeting in Iowa City, AFGC club received one state award, the Civic Achievement Award, and three district awards Advanced Club Rating Award, Blue Ribbon Club award and Blue Ribbon Year Book. Johnson also picked up the “Circle of Roses” awards given to club members. Johnson presented them to Loretta Kelly, Pauline McCoy and Jane Nichols at the meeting.

All members present signed a card for Agnes Eklund.

Gwen Sandeman made a motion to adjourn, Donna Thomas seconded it. All recited the conservation pledge.

Kelly gave program on recycling.

Refreshments were served by Marilyn Larimore and Gwen Sandeman.

The next meeting will be Aug. 8 at Afton Community Center.
