Afton Garden Club
The Afton Garden Club annual tour was June 6. Nine women had a tour of downtown Winterset, the John Wayne House flower garden, Clark tower and the sundial in the maze at the city park, Cedar Bridge flowerbeds planted by Sunshine Garden Club and Madison County Master Gardeners and Groth’s Gardens.
Participants lunched at the North Side Cafe.
The tour continued at Applehurst, Marilyn Spencer’s rose gardens and Madison County Historical Complex, where Jared McDonald, musuem currator, walked garden club members around the grounds and told about the various trees, shrubs and plants. He also showed a peacock egg and peacocks.
Creston Lions Club
Creston Lions Club met July 1 at The Pizza Ranch. First Vice President Ron Dunphy presided at the meeting. The Pledge of Allegiance was said, and Delmar Brown gave the invocation.
After the meal, a business meeting was held. There was correspondence from the district governor requesting help with storm clean-up at Adair. The minutes of the June 17 meeting were approved. The budget for 2014-15 was approved. The members decided to eliminate the noon meeting which has been held on the third Tuesday of each month. The club will continue to meet at 6:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of the month at The Pizza Ranch. The Board of Directors will continue to meet on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 a.m. at Adams Street Expresso.
Past District Gov. Sheri Holliday of Winterset presented a membership key to Tom Henderson. The Warren Coleman Award was presented to Charles Chester. New members Alice Brown, Jerry Katzer and Mark Zellmer were welcomed to the club. Sheri then installed the 2014-15 officers: Ron Dunphy, president; Tom Braymen, treasurer; Roger Turk, secretary; Alice Brown, tail twister; Charles Chester, lion tamer; Al Pokorny, director for two years; Stew Stewart, director for one year. The meeting was adjourned.
The Board of Directors met Tuesday. The club will meet again Aug. 5.
Kiwanis
The weekly Kiwanis meeting was held 12:05 p.m. Tuesday at The Windrow with 20 members and two guests. Chris Frederickson president, presided. Ed Ritter did the prayer, and Terry Freeman was finemaster.
The program was Denise Spear, volunteer coordinator with Care Initiatives. She discussed how hospice volunteers are trained, and the changes the program has gone through since the beginning.
All the Kiwanis members who helped with the parade organization and putting up and taking down the flags for Fourth of July were recognized and thanked at the meeting.
