James “Jim” Junior Walter

James “Jim” Junior Walter, 87, of Corning, died April 18, 2014, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 22, at Pearson Family Funeral Service, 701 Seventh St., Corning. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Corning. Visitation will be 1 to 8 p.m. today with family present 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Military services will be provided by Amercian Legion OURCQ Post 117. Memorials may be given in Jim’s name to be determined.

James “Jim” Junior Walter, son of Lucille (Findley) and James Alfred Walter, was born May 2, 1926, on a farm near Prescott.

Jim attended grade school at Prescott Community school, three years at Corning High School and graduated from Nodaway High School in 1943.

Jim enlisted in the Navy in 1944 and served during WWII in the Phillipines and Japan on board an L.S.T. in the South Pacific. He received his honorable discharge May 12, 1946.

On Sept. 12, 1948, Jim married Dorothy Marie Harvey at Mount Zion Church south of Brooks. They began their married life farming with Dorothy’s parents.

In 1969, they purchased their home in Corning, where together they operated Jim’s Greenhouse. Jim also drove a school bus for many years.

After Dorothy’s death in 2010, Jim stayed in the home until he moved to the Good Samaritan Home in Villisca.

Jim was a member of Iowa Suffolk Sheep Association.

Jim is survived by his children, Doug (Janice) Walter of Altoona, David L. (Kim) Walter of Corning,Randy Walter and Risa Sederburg of Villisca; eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; brother Max (Mae) Walter of Omaha, Neb.; sister-in-law Ruby Walter of Corning, several nieces, nephews, other relative and friends.

In addition to his wife, Jim was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Robert, Franklin “Red” and Clair Walter.
