Raiders fourth, Panthers sixth at Charger Relays

CHARITON — The Mount Ayr boys track team placed fourth with 95 points, while the Creston boys finished sixth with 62 team points here Tuesday at the Charger Relays.

Pella won the team competition in the large-school class with 144 points.

For the second straight meet, the Creston distance duo of senior Brandon Phipps and Cooper McDermott went one and two in the 1,600 meter run.

Phipps won the event, running 4:43.54, while McDermott finished second in 4:53.14.

“We did another daily double with Brandon and Cooper teaming up to take first and second,” Creston head coach Pat Schlapia said. “This is Brandon’s fourth win out of four races in the 1,600 this season.

“There from the very beginning, Brandon and Cooper were able to pull away. That was nice to see those guys get out and stretch it out a bit.”

Phipps and McDermott were also a part of the 4x800 relay team that took first place, joined by Bryce Briley and Jay Wolfe.

The only other top-three medalist for the Panthers on Tuesday was Wolfe in the 800 meters.

The Panther junior took second in the event, behind Pella’s Jordan Pingel. Wolfe crossed the line in 2:02.09.

Pella held Pingel out of the 4x800 relay in order to run him fresh in the open 800 meters.

“They came across at 59 and it seemed like that third 200, Pingel was able to get a gap,” Schlapia said. “He was able to pull away a bit from Jay and finish in 1:58.47. Right there, the tale of the tape was Jay ran a 1:56.8 in the 4x800, where Pingel was fresh coming into the open 8. I think that’s a big motivating factor for Jay after that 800 race.”

Sophomore Chris Foster finished fourth in the high jump for the Panthers, clearing a new personal best height of 5-7.

Other top-eight placewinners were Trevor Luther in the discus (sixth), Briley in the 400 meter dash (seventh), the 4x200 relay team of Alex Tamerius, Luther, Foster and Seth Maitlen (sixth), Nick Walsh in the 400 meter hurdles (sixth), the 4x100 relay team of Tamerius, Luther, Foster and Maitlen (seventh) and the 4x400 relay team of Briley, McDermott, Phipps and Wolfe (fifth).

The Creston 4x100 weightman’s relay took fourth in that event, running 58.79. Members of that team were Cody Tanner, Elijah Johnson, Alex Chapman and Nathan Cox.

Both Creston and Mount Ayr return to action today at the Panther Relays in Creston. Events begin at 5 p.m.
